Mason Happily Snacking

Image

Hey you, happy Wednesday! Without any school to attend or a really regular job to go to these days I have been creating new, sometimes really important, sometimes really not, tasks for myself to fill my days.  I am all about the list on weekdays- even just writing stuff down that I need to do feels like an accomplishment (:  Yeah, maybe that’s not a good thing…  Today is a list-less day, so, that’s been fun!  Maybe I should make one:

-get a new post out there in to the world (almost check!)

-keep scheming for my secret cake-to-order plan! excited!

-continue eating an un-healthy amount of honey roasted and spiced nuts

Which brings me to what I really wanted to tell you guys about: snacks!

ImageImage

There were three big winners at the Oscars the other night in my opinion: Ellen, Lupita’s speech (and Lupita’s dress! Girl crush!), and, most importantly, the snacks.

These nuts…like woah.  So good, so addictive.  I love you Joy.

Of course there had to be popcorn, and sure, we made a big bowl of insanely buttery and equally tasty popcorn, but why not just sprinkle it all over the dessert too? I mean, come on, this is genius.

Buttery and salty get friendly with sweet and creamy.  It’s a very good thing.

I definitely do not need these snacks in my life all the time.  But Oscar night? They where thoroughly necessary.

Snow Days

Yay for snow days! Even though I’m not going to school right now it was still pretty thrilling to get the call saying all schools would be closed- not just Monday but Tuesday too.  There is something so fun about being snowed in- for about two days, and then we are out there just pushing and shoving our car to get the heck out and into civilization (:

ImageImageImageImage

We did pretty good with our snow activities I think- got some sledding in (although it was almost too deep here to sled! We had to carve out a track), built a snowman and his lumpish dog, ate freshly fallen snow drizzled with maple syrup (yeah, this is kinda weird when I think about it, but it is so tasty- just think maple snow cone), and, the less thrilling part, had a power outage for most of the day and night.  At least we know where every candle in the house is now..

ImageImageImageImageImage

No question, snow covered hills and trees are the prettiest ever.  My absolute favorite part about the snow is being out side and getting completely cold and exhausted, and then coming inside, getting out of wet snow clothes and thawing by the fire with a hot beverage- happy place!

ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

I hope you all got to play around in the snow a bit and had a few days off from our little busy lives to snuggle up and watch the flakes falling out the window!

(Thanks Sumi, for being my trusty model, taking on the cold like a champ, and letting me boss you around a fair amount (: Sisters are the best!)

Photo Booth!

We set up a little sparkly photo booth in our house for my birthday party a few weekends ago, and I just loved how the pictures turned out! Silly and sophisticated at the same time. I wanted to share them with you guys just for fun!

ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

I’m pretty much crazy about photo booths and always get so inspired to make them at parties, but it rarely happens.  So fun to actually do it! Also, it helps to have really cute friends (:

Some crazy amazing photo booth inspiration here and here. (from Oh Happy Day!) *Swoon (:

A Beautiful Birthday

Yesterday I turned 18. Part of me is like, yeah, 18, cool, no big deal.  A really small part.  Mostly I cannot believe it.  These past few years (meaning like the last 5!) have totally flown by, and I am getting super excited and a teeny tiny bit freaked out by this whole next step called becoming an adult.  I am so not an adult yet, and I don’t think I will be for a while.  But the experiences and friends I’ve had over the past few years have definitely helped me to begin the long process of becoming one in the best way possible.

 ImageImageImage

Yesterday I went over to the Islands for the day with Mike.  We started out on Lopez where Mike was working for a little while, then visited Orcas to get together with his old friend and see the beautiful Inn he owns over there.

ImageImageImageImageImage

We got to peek into the inspiring kitchen at the Inn, and meet the sweet mama pigs and their adorable piglets that he is raising.

ImageImage

Before catching the ferry back to Anacortes we had a delicious meal at an Italian restaurant in downtown Orcas, and I left full, happy, and grateful.

This past year has been so fun, interesting, and challenging.  I am really curious how these next few big years are going to fold out for me and my friends and family- I’m sure we will all have some adventures!  Here’s to another year of growing and enjoying it.

Happy Weekend!

Image

Hey everybody! My schedule is a lot more open these days so my weekdays are pretty laid back in general, but I still get stoked for the weekends.  They’ve just got a different feel- a nice, slow down, read your novel for as long as you want, enjoy long mornings and eat late breakfasts feel.  This weekend is especially exciting because I am heading down to Portland again! (as I write this, actually- I decided to take the BOLT BUS and they have wifi on the bus! Super convenient.) I am meeting my grandma down there (yay!), and today we are going to check out the Oregon Culinary Institute and eat dinner in their restaurant. I am super excited to see what the school is like- I’ve heard lots of good things.

ImageImageImage

I am so happy to be going back to Portland already.  I really love the vibe of the city, plus the food scene is of course awesome.  Hoping to try out some new places, namely here, here, and here, and also go back to some past favorites, like here and here

Random note: I am kind of obsessed with sky pictures these days. These are from a beautiful sunset drive to Seattle a few weeks ago. Image

I hope you all have a yummy weekend!

Being Home

Image

Hey guys.  Happy New Year!  As most of you already know, my European adventure ended a little sooner than originally planned.  I got home right before the holiday season got into full swing, and it has been so, so fun to see so many people I love and be so many places I missed.  I really appreciate all your sympathy for the drastic change in plans, and I was definitely disappointed, sad, and frustrated with the whole ordeal.  BUT- being home for the holidays has been as wonderful as always, and I am just getting more and more excited for all the opportunities I have here.  Lots of you have been asking what I’m planning to do next, and I have probably been giving you a really vague answer because I have a lot of excitement but not a lot of plans.  I know that I want to go to college next fall and that applying for schools and scholarships is definitely part of the next big adventure.  Right now I am really excited about a couple Portland school as well as an art college in Savannah, Georgia.  But don’t hold me to it! (:  My mind is changing constantly about what exactly I want to study or when and where I want to study it.  I know, I know- It’s about time to make some decisions.  Again, exciting and overwhelming!

I have really loved writing this blog and sharing my travels with you all, and I can’t even say how much hearing back from you meant while I was away.  Photography, writing, lifestyle, and travel are still some of my most favorite things and I hope to continue sharing them here on this blog.  I totally don’t blame you if you don’t feel like reading quite as much now that I’m not off in some awesome foreign city having exciting experiences and eating amazing food! But I love sharing even the little things here on the blog, and I hope to do that more (and consistently) in the future.

And by the way, the blog you SHOULD be reading is my dearest friend Rosie’s about her incredible adventures over the next few months in Latin America.  She is the best, and I am so pumped to read about her experiences.

So thank you for supporting me you guys, both overseas and especially when I come home.  Love you all!

Pisa + Saying Goodbye to Italy

Hey everyone! I hope you are all getting to ease back into things after a great vacation (and lots of good food).  And Christmas! Lights are going up and tinsel is being hung all over the place over here.  My Instagram feed is just one ongoing stream of Christmas tree shopping and decorating.  And there is snow up in the mountains!  I love it, but it also means it’s December, and that my time in Italy is almost up.  I (finally) found a new host in England after the first few options fell through, and (happy/sad), I am flying out to London in three hours!  The plan right now is to stay with this family until the beginning of February.  I can’t wait to get to know London, and I think that it will be a really wonderful place to be for the holidays.

For one last hoorah in Italy I decided to go this past weekend for a short trip to Pisa to see the famed tower and the supposedly sweet little town.  It was a really nice little adventure, and I got a beautiful sunny day to wander the city, eat good food, settle into a sweet hostel, and take pictures of the tower at sunset.

ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Get ready for way too many tower pictures…

ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

So entertaining to watch people take the classic holding up the tower shot (:ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

After getting good and lost in the streets of Pisa, I ended up at the river right when the light was magic.  So amazing.

ImageImageImageImageImage

Came across this hip hop showcase in a small piazza.  The rappers were actually pretty good, but the best part was watching them try to get a random assortment of passerby super pumped up.

ImageImage

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…

ImageImage

When I came across this little eatery on a small street with handwritten signs on pieces of cardboard and menus on scrap paper, I knew I had to go.  I wandered around in the freezing cold until the restaurant opened and then was lead to my seat by a sweet old woman.  Her husband was in the kitchen, and they had matching wild grey hair.  They served me a wonderfully simple and delicious meal of cured meat, cheese, roasted vegetables with sweet balsamic and the most amazing focaccia.  It was all served with Italian/English small talk and so much excitement and exuberance for the food.  It was really a wonderful evening.

ImageImage

I wasn’t sure if these were family photos or just a random collection, but they were so beautiful

ImageImageImageImage

The cook got really excited at one point explaining to me in the simplest Italian he could come up with that my hairdo (just a top knot) was just like that of the model in one of Renoir’s paintings, and then insisted that his son take a picture of it (:  And how sweet is his handmade chef’s hat?Image

The epic view from my cute little hostel.ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Snow in the mountains on the way home!Image

It was an awesome last weekend in Italy, and I am so glad I went on one last little adventure.  Since then I have been just soaking up my last little bit of time in Genova and packing up.  I can’t believe how fast my time here as gone, and I am so thankful for all the experiences I have had in Italy.  I want to say a better goodbye to this beautiful country in another post soon.

Until then, hope you are all having a good week!  Can’t wait to share this next part of my adventure with you!
